Globalization and Informatization have become two obvious characteristics in current society, and they also have profound influence to the urban and regional economy. But we still didn't know how these two things processing and functioning. This dissertation tries to adopt a broad study framework that based on interaction of globalizaton and localization for urban planning and regional plannning study in China. Traditional region space theories, general study on globalization and The new international division of labor have their own shortcomings in studing the current urban and regional development. So this dissertation apllies Global Production Network (GPNs) to work for it. The dissertation will hopefully promote the study and research on the basic theory of metropolitan areas, and thereby provide certain valuable reference for the planning and management of the metropolitan areas. The dissertation consists of two parts which contain 8 chapters in total. The first part is composed of the 5 three chapters, which aim at reconstructuring the GPNs framework and use it as the theory base to analyze the prodution spatial organization of Metropolitan area. The second part includes the next 3 chapters, which utilize GPNs to study spatial organization of metropolitan areas and the Shanghai Metropolitan area as well. In that way, the correctness of the theory will be proved. And there two turns in this analyzing process, from enterprise prodution spatial organization, diffusion and embeddness to urban economy, urban industry structure and function zone division, then to prodution spatial organization of metropolitan areas.Chapter 1 is introduction. Mainly introduces the study source and background, the theory and practice meaning of dissertation. Then poses the development of GPNs has lead to new international division, and this will have more influence on urban and regional development. The four following chapters demonstrate GPNs study frameowrk.Chapters 2-5 of this dissertation focus on the theory of Global Production Networks. Chapter 2 focuses on reviewing the literature on GPNs study, and then refines the study dimension and content of GPNs that are appropriate to our study for urban and regional development. Chapter 3 mainly focuses on enterprise organization in Global Production Networks and Chaper 4 mainly focuses on local embeddness of Global Production Networks.then the dissertation exemplify the computer industry to validate GPNs study framework in Chapter 5.Chapters 6-8 of this dissertation focus on the theoretical and empirical contribution. Which are the central parts of this study. Chpter 6 is mainly about spatial organization of metropolitan areas dominated by GPNs. The chapter will initially apply the system of economics of scale based on endogenous comparative advantage to discuss the relationship between urban production spatial organization and global production networks. Under the multi-scale functions of the intra-product division directed by global production networks, metropolitan areas are becoming the spatial nodes of the economy under globalization. With a review to the spectrum of the development of the world cities system, it is proposed that Metropolitan-regions serving as the medium to associate globalization and localization have become the regional motors of the global economy. If the focus shifts within the scope of metropolitan areas, the concept of spatial cost curve, deriving from the concept of land lease, is employed to analyze the urban spatial structure's evolution process from monocentric city to metropolitan areas.Chapter 7 will initially clarify the spatial scope of Yangtze Delta metropolitan-region. Then from the perspective of industrial structure, a discussion on the evolution of division of labor in Shanghai's economic development will be conducted. The author points out that the current spatial organization of Shanghai metropolitan area is predominated by global production networks, and hence it appears to be a clear shift from monocentric city to metropolitan areas. Then the next part of the chapter will discuss the Yangtze Delta region, with Shanghai as its center, achieves its upgrade in the world city system through economic integration and competition under the influence of global production networks. And a case study over role of Suzhou Industry Park in Global production networks to represent the Yangtze Delta region. In the last part the dissertation promotes development strategy for the Yangtze Delta region.Chapter 8 is the conclusion. The chapter will conclude the theoretical achievements and the case study from GPNs to production spatial organization of metropolitan areas. The last part of the dissertation will discuss some relevant issues and the direction in which further study will be carried on.
