With an advance in both economy and society in China, corporate social responsibility (shortened as CSR henceforth) issues have attracted more and more attention from both theoretical and practical fields. Amongst these, the influence of fulfillment of CSR on corporate performance has been the very focus of enterprises. Most present research centers on large-sized enterprises rather than small and medium-sized enterprises (shortened as SMEs henceforth). The paper has therefore conducted a preliminary research on the relation between CSR of SMEs and their corporate performance in the case of Zhejiang Province.Above all, the paper has delimited the concept and scope of China's SMEs in terms of "Law of the People's Republic of China on Promotion of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises." (2003 )Secondly, beginning with the concept of ISR, the paper incorporates all the interpretations of CSR by scholars, delimits the scope of CSR, and categorizes CSR into corporate legal responsibility and moral responsibility. And then it demonstrates legal responsibilities arid specifies the moral responsibilities from legal perspectives and from ethical perspectives respectively.Thirdly, after a comprehensive review on the empirical literature of relations between CSR and corporate performance, the paper concludes that research on such relations is rare and thus conducts a preliminary research on that.Now that the current evaluation system of CSR is still yet to be improved, founded the domestic and foreign research,based on corporate social responsibility content discussion, considering the reality of SMEs in our country.the paper has set up index evaluation system of China's SMEs' CSR, and empowered each index through expert interview methods. In the meanwhile, the paper divides the corporate performance into economic performance and social performance by means of the way and extent to which CSR influences corporate performance. The paper has also set up index evaluation system of China's corporate performance based on economic and social performances, with each index empowered through expert interview methods.The paper then samples 50 SMEs in Zhejiang Province and conducts an empirical research. The paper makes an analysis of correlation, regression and variance on the statistics of questionnaire via SPSS software, indicates the influence of corporate scale, corporate lifecycle of different periods, industry of different types on CSR, confirms the relation between social responsibility and corporate performance of SMEs, and regresses step by step the corporate economic performance and social performance respectively. The results roughly confirm the theoretical hypothesis: the fulfillment of CSR of SMEs can enhance the corporate performance.Finally, the paper puts forward some corresponding suggestions based on the research outcome and looks into pursuing research later on.
