With the accelerating process of industrialization and urbanization, the man-land contradiction is becoming more and more remarkable in the coastal area. Thus, the health of land use system is gradually attracting people great attention. The health of land use system related to human health, and even related to the sustainable use of land resources.This paper adopts main research methods which are Literature and Data Method, Analytic Hierarchy Process, multi-index synthetical evaluating method, linear regression. The study indicates that the synthetical index of the health of land use system is 0.260 in 1996 and 0.783(sub-health) in 2004, and average annual growth rate is 5.81%. From 1996 to 2001, the health of land use system in Shanghai is ill or even worse. The level of the health of land use system comes into the state of sub-health from 2002-2004. It is forecasted that the health index will reach 0.971 by means of linear regression in 2009, and the average annual growth is about 3.13 percent from 2004 to 2009. Even though the increase of speed will reduce by one times, the health of land use system will still develop towards good direction.At the same time, the research indicate that the structure of land use system is close related with the diversity index of land use type and proportion of agricultural production value in GDP; second production value average land area, urbanization rate, growth rate of average personal income, decrement rate of farmland has good relationship with system function; the per capita GDP and commodity rate crop farming manufacture is significantly connected to the benefit of land use system; the main barrier factors affecting the health of land use system in Shanghai include declining proportion of farmland, increasing population pressure, large number of per capita land of rural residential area and low level of land use in some town and so on. And it is still shown in the study that the improvement of the health of land use system lies on the growth level of the structure, the function and the benefit of system. If it is enabled to be the health status for the land use system, first of all, the rational structure of system should be available. On the premise of ensuring effective exertion of system function, the synthetical benefit will be gained. This conclusion is coincident with the perspective of scholars concerned about the relation between the health of land use system and the structure, the function and the benefit. Therefore, the synthetical evaluation in this paper is to some extent reasonable. Based on previous study, some steps and approaches are put forward to boost the health level of land use system in Shanghai in the thesis.
