After World War II, the world economy entered a period of rapid global development. Along with the continuous outspread of global markets, the development of international trade and great concern about the environment, the relationship between the environment and international trade become very important. China, as a great developing country is becoming immersed increasingly in international markets. Many nations are paying much attention to her trade levels, and environmental trade barriers affect more and more of her trade development. At the same time, the development of Chinese industries threatens the environment heavily: "nature becomes the fuel of economy". Now a new epoch is approaching: "Green Waves" are springing into the world arena; green trade or environmental trade is increasing rapidly.This article looks at China within the context of the global economy, and focuses on the increasing conflict between trade and environment. There are five sections in this article.Firstly, the article introduces the background of global trade and environment. It expatiates in two aspects. One is about trade liberalization and globalization. The other is the international discussions on trade and environment including proposals at Doha, PPMs and government policies in exporting countries, and labeling and the TBT agreement.The second part introduces world and Chinese organizations concerned with trade and environment. Trade is now governed by a detailed set of inter-related laws delineating different rights and responsibilities for nations. In this part, WTO, CTE, and CCICED are mentioned.The third part of this paper summarizes major achievements which were created by the Chinese on trade and environment: WTO accession, "Green barriers" and market access, environmental standards and competitiveness, trade and environmental policy coordination, investment and sustainable development, and technology transfer and the clean development mechanism.The fourth part mainly addresses trade and environmental problems that exist in China. It considers these problems on two levels of contents. One is the static effect analysis of market access, international competitive power, and sectoral trade liberalization and sustainability. The other is the dynamic effects analysis. Relationships between environmental regulations and innovations, environmental standards and new opportunities, the competitive power of green products, and something of Chinese market and investment attractions are all analyzed in this part.The last part lists many recommendations on the opportunities and challenges mentioned above in the field of trade and environment, such as how to deal with green barriers and market access deeply, emphasis on green products and green industries, investment and sustainable development, setting up proper developing systems and realizing sectoral trade liberalization and sustainability.
