Since the foundation of New China, regional economic disparities and conflicts have been more severe and concerned with the conversion of regional economic developmental patterns. Theories and practice have proven that government has played an important role in regional economic development. Government not only interferes directly in regional economy to some extent, but also determines the efficiency of market which acts as means of allocation of resources, consequently it influences regional developmental tendency. This dissertation purposes to, from the perspective of central government, study and analyze the relationship between specific governmental behavior and the changing trend of regional economic disparities during such three different periods as planned economy period, commodity economy period with plans and socialist market economy period with Chinese characteristics, and disclose the reasons why these disparities have expanded, and then bring forward the methods to solve this problem.The dissertation includes 5 parts: the first part is introduction, which introduces backgrounds, emphases and purposes of study; the second part is literature review, which introduces and comments on study bases and current situation of this theme; the third part is to study the relationship between governmental behavior and the absolute and relative changing trends of regional economic disparities during three different periods, which discloses that actual changing trends run counter to the intention of governmental behavior; the fourth part is to analyze the government intervention in the allacation of resources in various regions, and then how the different strategies and methods adopted by the central government impact on regional economic disparities, as well as the resulting consequences; the fifth part is to make policy recommendations so as to achieve coordinated development of regional economy.
