Container port multimodal transportation system is composed of many types of transportation modes, such as railway, highway, waterway and so on. Different types of transportation processes are connected in this system to accomplish collecting and dispatching the freights. There involves many entities, resources and activities in this system. And the construction of the system is complicated and simulation environment are also dynamic. It's usually complex and difficult to model this system with the single discrete event simulation modeling method. Additionally for implementing interoperability and expanding of models, the High Level Architecture (HLA) technology, as the newest distributed interaction simulation technology, is introduced to build distributed simulation model for multimodal operation of container port and simply the modeling process. The objective of this paper is to show the process of modeling the distributed HLA simulation model. There are five parts discussed in this paper: 1) The structure and activities of container port multimodal operation system are introduced. And the inner and outer influence ingredients upon the operation capability are shown. 2) The framework infrastructure of the simulation federation is built. The federation is composed of three kinds of federates: operation federate, information management federate and operation management federate. And the operation federates consist of four basic discrete event simulation models: berth federate, terminal gate federate, rail yard stacking federate and dock yard stacking federate. 3) The Federation Object Model (FOM) and Simulation Object Model (SOM) are constructed according to the Object Model Template (OMT). The attribute ownership transfer process model, the interaction process among federates and the global time advance process of the federation are described particularly. 4) The communication interfaces between the federate and RTI (Run-Time Infrastructure) and the discrete event simulation models of every federate are built based on the RTI interface specification. 5) The simulation federation system is accomplished and validated combined with a concrete operation process of a container port terminal. The distributed simulation model accomplishes the general time advancement, information interaction and data distribution. The federates share the information by sending and receiving the interaction classes and publishing and subscribing the object classes. The...
