This dissertation aims at establishing a system of appraising regional sustainable development and a system of indexes from a geographical spatial perspective, through which to research the SD actuality and trend of the Yangtze River Delta. Based on the statistical datum of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and China in the past years, we utilize many mathematical models, such as Analytic Hierarchy Process , Principal Component Analysis , Ecological Footprint and so on, to analyze the SD of the Yangtze River Delta. The dissertation brings forth actual visage of the regional SD and reveals reasons of inducing unsustainable development.The first chapter brings out the need and meaning of the research, points out that SD is the only way. Based on this, choice of the visual angle and logical frame are displayed.The second chapter introduces some correlative theories of the SD, which are mainly about means of appraising and systems of indexes. Combining the contents and aspects of the SD, the typical means of appraising and systems of indexes and the regional characteristic of the Yangtze River Delta, we choose some kinds of indexes to form a system to estimate regional SD degree.The third chapter analyzes the current situation of the Yangtze River Delta's SD, including experts' production of regional SD, economic and social development, major problems presence and so on. The outcome indicates that economy is in the kernel status, lack of resources is the common barrier, environment pollution is prevalent, traditional mode of economic growth is still in the dominative situation.The fourth chapter utilizes the perfective SD system and many ways of appraising to estimate the actual SD situation of the Yangtze River Delta from different spatial and time scales. The level and capability of the Yangtze River Delta's SD is higher than that of the Pearl River Delta and China, in the situation of weak SD; as for SD, there are no big differences among Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, but there are distinct differences among the 16 cities; the whole ecological footprint is bigger than the ecological carrying capacity in the Yangtze River Delta, the primary reasons lies in a mass of energy consumption and shortage of plantation.The fifth chapter tries to bring forward some countermeasures and opinions to enhance SD capacity in the Pearl River Delta, based on experience of SD at home and abroad and research outcomes above. It includes economic development, environment protection, pollution prevention, resources availing and so on, at the same time we usemeasures of administrative, economic, scientific and demonstrative to safeguard its running.The last chapter summarizes viewpoints of the dissertation, puts forward general ways and means to study regional SD.
