Along with the deepening of China's opening up of its retail industry, an influx of foreign capital based retailing has come into China. Retail formats in China are in a complex and changeable situation : New forms continuously emerge, and the original ones change; some formats are over-developed, and some are insufficiently developed; efficiency varies greatly among different forms of business, and their growth has been substantially fluctuating, ect. As a result, the government, enterprises and scholars have paid much attention to the problem that the opening up of China's retail industry may cause problems to its structure, or even to the security of national economy.In the foreign researches about retail formats, the focus is usually on their evolutions, development and spatial structures. Although there are some researches about retail format structures, they are mainly focused on the analysis of how the number of shops takes effect, while the transnational retail enterprises, which also act as an influetial factor, are not metioned. There are many factors which affect the structural change of business formats, however, for a developing country in the period of economic transition such as China, effects from transnational enterprises to the structure of its business format are not to be ignored.In order to study this problem, I will firstly analyze in terms of theory how the entry of multinational retail enterprises effect China's retail format structure. Then I'll establish an appraisal system on format structures to appraise the retail format structure of China in recent years(including the saturation of retail format structure, the level of asset profits and the profitability).At last , I will analyze the relationship between the two above (the entry of transnational enterprises and the structural change of China's retail formats) using empirical methods.
