Energy and economy are closely related to each other: economy growth requires sufficient energy, meanwhile the development of energy industry is based on economic growth. Currently, China's national economy is booming, bringing with it increasing energy demand. Moreover, different regions of China are under various circumstances with regard to regional economic growth and energy consumption. Therefore, studying the relationships between energy consumption and economic growth of different regions of China is of great importance for the development and application of national energy strategies as well as realizing objectives of energy conservation and emission reduction policies. In this dissertation, current situations of China's energy consumption and economic growth are first examined, revealing their simultaneous trends and similar distributions. In Chapter 2, the overall relationship between China's energy consumption and economic growth are discussed based on time series analysis and Granger causality test. The result shows that energy has contributed a lot to China's rapid economic growth. Then, a new regional division method is put forward by virtue of energy consumption elasticity coefficient. According to this method, China is divided into four main energy-economic regions, namely developed region (DV), rapidly developing region (RD), high-level smoothly developing region (HS) and low-level smoothly developing region (LS). In Chapter 4, relationships between energy consumption and economic growth of different regions are investigated. At last, by means of factor analysis, factors that are influencing the different regional energy-economic relationships are discussed and further policy suggestions are put forward. |
