The power grid enterprises play a pivotal role in national development and people's livelihood. The power transmission and distribution equipments are responsible for the transmission and distribution of power and the stable operation of grid, and the costs are a substantial proportion of the investment on power equipments. In 2009, State Grid Corporation launched the management of asset life cycle. In the management process concerning the grid assets, the loss caused by the failure is essential. Therefore, we are supposed to consider the reliability of equipments and systems in the design and bidding and further analyze the effects of reliability on the costs of life cycle. Consequently, the quality of transmission equipment is ameliorated and the service life is extended. Through the management of asset life cycle, we can achieve the improvement of asset quality and maintenance costs, and accordingly, reduce the overall costs significantly and ameliorate the operation efficiency of assets. For this reason, the research on the application of management of asset life cycle in the construction of substation is indispensable in theory and practice. This paper sets Yantai Mushan 220kV substation as the research object, and applies the concepts and methods of life cycle cost (LCC) to the substation design and equipment selection. To minimize LCC, we locate the most important factors affecting LCC greatly to control by sensitivity analysis, and then balance each components of expenditure by expense-profit analysis. Through the early survey of the substation, the LCC analysis of primary equipment and comparison of schemes designed, this paper finally chooses the 220kv main transformer as a key study object. By LCC analysis of the two alternatives, we get the LCC scheme for primary equipment of the substation, which provides a reference of LCC analysis in the application of substation construction.
