An Analysis On Determinants Of Waste Disposal Behavior In Pig Farming

Recently, along with the adjustment of agriculture structure, the pig farming is developing rapidly as the main part of animal husbandry. There is a trend from family-rasing to large-scale farming, the increase in productivity and pork production have played a crtical role in meeting domestic pork demend resulted from rising residents standard of living. However, with the development of large-scale pig farming, the constranied production of pig is posing a threat to environmental contamination, while the pollution control policy management, construction and technical regulations are significantly lagging behind the pace of pig industry.Based on a concerned literature review, this article tires to reveal the decision-making influencing factor among different pig raising households'behavior, which provides a theoretical basis for the understanding the relationship between scaling of pig farming and waste management.Based on macro data from1996 to 2008, this paper analyses the evolving trend of China's pig industry, waste management situation and difficulties. To further find out factors determining the mode of waste dispose, on-site interviews of 150 specialized pig breeding households are conducted at four different towns in Wuxue City of Hubei Province, and 134 valid questionnaires was collected.The study argued that the number of families engaged in agricultural, the scale of pig farms, the distance from the farm to the nearest residential area, the volume of biogas tank, farmer's gender, whether part-time farmers or fish farming, and government subsidy of building biogas digesters play significant influence in household's choice of waste disposal methods. In addition, ordinal logistic regression model was used to analyse the determinants of different scale farming, it is concluded that regulation of the piglets market, reasonable arrangements for training and appropriate way to guide the local organization will help control the development trend of the local pig farming, and thus affecting the local waste management standards.In order to resolve the pollution problems of pig farming, following measures should be adopted: (1) To improve the farmers'understanding of the hazards of pollution and enhance the environmental awareness by publicizing hog pollution cases such as air pollution and water pollution;(2) To promote the applications of more rational and efficient feed technology in pig farming, and improve the infrastructure standard to reduce the mount of waste from pig breeding.(3) To advocate appropriate scale farming by regulating the piglets market, arranging reasonable training and guiding the local pig industry organizations. Thus, to reduce the excessive environmental pressure caused by the development of large-scale pig industry.(4) To improve the biogas digester construction subsidies policy to enhance the application efficiency of methane fermentation technology.
