In China, Medium-speed Wire Discharge Machine (MS-WEDM) plays an essential rolein the field of molding manufacture, tool shape-machining, hard-machined materials(composite materials for aero-space application and high hardness materials) and precisecomplex part machined. As the core of MS-WEDM, CNC system and processing techniqueof WEDM determine the accuracy, stability and efficiency of WEDM process. Based on thedesign of CNC system of MS-WEDM, this study mainly focuses on the software ofup-system in CNC and processing technique of WEDM.After reviewing a large number of literatures, the domestic and foreign researches aboutthe development of CNC system and processing technique of WEDM have been analyzedand concluded. To meet the demands of domestic markets, the specific hardware andsoftware structure of CNC system have been designed including the development ofup-system in CNC. Moreover, the hardware part of CNC uses the structure of MotionControl Card and Industrial PC, while the software part adopts Modular Design method withthe good features of high independence and flexibility. Then the software mainly describesthe designs of User Interface Modular, Location Modular, Cutter Compensation Modular andTaper Machining Modular. In addition, on the self-developed MS-WEDM, the experiments of processingtechniques of WEDM have been conducted by the method of Response Surface Method(RSM). According to the experimental results and analysis of variance, the quadraticregression models of surface roughness (Ra) and materials removal rate (MRR) have beenestablished to analyze the interactions of machining parameters and optimize the WEDMprocess. In the end, the validation experiments have been carried out to confirm thereliability and feasibility of our study.
