We are facing the shortage situation on global forest after over-exploitation more than a century. As one of renewable resources, bamboo receives more and more attentions, which with short growth cycle, beautiful lines and uniform texture. On the other hand, our country has the largest bamboo resources in the world. Therefore, accelerating the use of bamboo can alleviate the forest shortage situation and has the possibility to open up new international markets. There are two categories about bamboo applications:the use of raw materials and through processing. The efficiency and cost of bamboo processing greatly affect the development and utilization of bamboo resources, and splitting bamboo is the most important and vital processing. In fact, the processing still stays in manual or semi-automated stage. Therefore, it is necessary and emergent to improve the CNC (Computer numerical control) level of existing splitting equipments and design a CNC splitting machine that applied to the current production conditions. Thus we can improve productivity and working environment, promote the automation development of existing bamboo equipment, find out a new way to realize numerical control on bamboo processing early.After analyzing the existing splitting equipments, according to the current process level of the splitting bamboo, a calculation model of the bamboo volume and weight is established theoretically. Further, a calculation method about the outturn rate of bamboo is estimated through this model. Then, by using this theoretical method, a CNC splitting machine is designed, which meet the demand of market and splitting bamboo factories.In this paper based on the calculation method about log, improvements of the calculation model are performed to meet the physical characteristics of bamboo such as segments and similar elliptical section. Moreover, through a lot of experiments, the calculation method about the outturn rate of bamboo is explored. On the basis of the current splitting machine, feed mechanism, elasticity aligning guide and automatic tool changer are designed in the CNC splitting machine, to achieve the CNC transformation of the splitting machine. In this design, reasonableness of the mechanical design is fully considered, and static and modal analyses of this machine are performed by using finite element analysis to optimize the parts with the low strength. Finally, an optimal design of the CNC splitting machine is obtained.Automatic splitting devices with high level are important to change the situation of the current bamboo processing machinery and develop the bamboo processing in our country. There are the important theoretical foundations to realize the comprehensive automation and CNC of the bamboo processing in this paper. Meanwhile, a CNC splitting machine is designed, which meet the market demand.
