The design of automatic tool changer (ATC) is the key question to realize the flexibleintelligent processing and manufacturing. ATC with a knife library, in the process ofmanufacturing complex parts, can continuously change tool in multiple process, so theprocess is relatively concentrated, and it improves the machining accuracy and the laborproductivity. This paper focuses on the automatic tool changer of Hanchuan Machine ToolPlant XH716D vertical machining center, and studies the mechanical design and controlproblem in the process of grasping and changing tool between its robot tool and spindle.Themain research work is as follows:Firstly, the market research on the automatic tool changer is made, and the paperanalyzes the working principle of the robot tool changer. According to the needs of verticalmachining center XH716D automatic tool changer, the tool changer mechanism is improved,and the mechanical arm is designed and improved,and the strain force of robot tool ischecked, and the material, cylinder and auxiliary device are selected and designed, and theprecise positioning of knife library is optimized and designed, which guarantees to accuratelyand quickly grasps the tool in the loading and unloading, and whose motion mode is simpleand reliable. Secondly, a set scheme is designed, which adopts the programmable logiccontroller (PLC) to achieve the control of griping and changing tool between spindle andvarious tools in tool library, and the system of PLC control parts, electrical components areoptimized and designed, and the key steps electrical control ladder diagram is drown ontaking tools and changing the tools and so on, and the method of software design of severalwork modes in ATC system is introduced. Finally, the paper describes the problem of theinstallation and debugging of the system. By laboratory simulation debugging, compared withtraditional relay control, the program have shorter tool change time, larger tool storageamount, safer and more reliable.
