Chip breaking is one of the key factors affecting the machining processes. Themethod that makes the bionic form on the cutting tool surface can improve the wearresistance of the cutting tool and prolong the service life of the cutting tool. When thebionic tool cuts the workpiece, the chip morphology is also changed. In order to achievethe better chip breaking during cutting process, cemented cutter is chosen to cut thestainless steel workpiece. The influence of bionic tool on chip morphology is analyzed inthis study.In this paper, laser processing technology is applied to make pits, horizontal stripes,vertical stripes and grids on the rake face of cutting tool. And then do cutting experimentsof workpiece of304stainless steel in the same conditions. Through changing cuttingparameters, chip breaking ranges with bionic tools and non-bionic tools were studied, andthe cutting parameters are analyzed during the cutting process. Cutting model wasestablished with Deform software. Cutting stresses were compared between bionic cuttingtool and non-bionic cutting tool. The diameter and axial length of the chip with differentcutters were analyzed. The reason of chip diameter and axial length were researched, andthe relationship between them was established.The research shows that, compared with the ordinary cemented cutters, the numbersof chip breaking cut with bionic tool are increased. The pit bionic tool obtain the largestnumber of chip breaking in the low speed. Vertical stripes bionic tool obtain the largestchip breaking numbers. Compared with general tool, the chip breaking cut with the surfacebionic tool has smaller average diameter. Because the contact area between tool and chipbionic surface becomes small, the friction force decreases, which the resistance of chipcurling is decreased. The chip becomes more curler and then the chip diameter becomessmaller, which leads the chip critical length also becoming shorter. The chip breakingbecomes more efficiently.
