Golden pheasant is famous ornamental bird in the world whose feather is gorgeous. In recent years, Chrysolophus pictus is studied in many areas, such as genetics and anatomy. But the expression of chrysolophus pictus feather color diversity and distribution are rarely reported, so in this paper, we studied the feather of development in the embryonic period. In situ hybridization technique is used to study the expression of BCO2 at different stages of embryo dorsal skin, in order to provide necessary basis for the molecular mechanism of chrysolophus pictus feather hair follicle development and feather color diversity. The results are show below:(1) The Chrysolophus pictus dorsal feather development of HE staining shows that in the embryonic period of the first seven days, the back skin has been thickened, While the dorsal feathers bud has not development yet. At the ninth day, the dorsal skin dermal cells gathered at the bottom of the base plate of epidermis and form a feather germ cuticular base plate; At the tenth day, The dorsal skin thickening constantly and entered into a short feather bud stage; The feather of dorsal skin has been entered into the short feather bud stage in the embryonic period at eleventh day. At the thirteenth day, The dorsal skin has been entered into the long feather bud stage and it can be observed that the melanin cells generated on the dorsal skin.(2) The Chrysolophus pictus eyes development of HE staining shows that in the embryonic period of the first seven days, It can be observed that the retina and choroid have been formed; At the ninth day, the retina has been started thickening; It can be observed that a few of melanin has been formed on the choroid in the embryonic period at tenth day, while the sclera thickening; At the eleventh day, the retinal thickening constantly, while the large number of the melanin generated on the choroid; At the thirteenth day, the large number of the melanin generated on the choroid at the thirteenth day, while the sclera thickening.(3)The In situ hybridization results showed that the BCO2has a different expression in various organs and tissues at the chrysolophus pictus embryos and it needs to degrade the carotenoids in the egg yolk during the organ development and growth. The BCO2 expression is significantly higher than the surrounding tissues in the dorsal skin and retina, This illustrates the carotenoids in the yolk and the deposit is different in the different tissues.
