Tailings dam is an important ancillary facilities to the mine enterprise and it played a crucial role to develop the economy and protection the environment. However, because of the frequent accidents, the safety of the tailings dam has really come to the forefront. The debris flow caused by the tailings dam break has the characteristics of high energy and fast speed, and extremely easy to cause the devastating disaster to the downstream area. So, it is necessary to study the flow characteristics and forecasting inundated area of debris flow. By using the blocking dam to reduce the disaster of debris flow and provide reference for the prevention of debris flow.(1)This paper introduces the flow characteristics of debris flow, and regard the debris flow as Bingham fluid, besides summarizing and explaining the theory of the turbulent motion and the fluid motion equations and the accumulation of the debris flow. Based on these theoretical basis and then by establishing the three-dimensional numerical model of ideal to analyze the law of the influencing for coefficient of viscosity, yield stress and dam height to the debris flow movement characteristics.(2)Based on the law of debris flow movement and created a simple three dimensional dam break model. Through a blocking dam at the downstream to get the most appropriate arrangement angle, height and arrangement of layers for the blocking dam of the same quantities.(3)Based on the Flow-3D software and combined with the instance of the dam-break, established a three-dimensional dam-break model. Using the above theory as the basic, completed the simulation calculated. Through the scope by the simulation of dam-break and the actual scope comparison, showed that the calculated is closer to the actual scope. So it can be used to predict the evolution of the debris flow by the numerical simulation. It can predict the appearance time of the maximum velocity and maximum thickness and the maximum thickness size of debris flow through the analysis of the changing in the velocity and the thickness of the debris flow over time of the 8 monitoring points downstream, and can provide some reference value for the prevention of debris flow.(4)The above blocking dam is applied to practical project to analyze its role in controlling the debris flow. By contrast the two scope of debris flow, can know that the blocking dam has a significant effect for protecting the important facilities. When there is no additional blocking dam, the important facilities is under attack. The blocking dam shorted the distance which does the debris flow extend along the centerline, and avoid the destruction of the important facilities effectively. Through the 8 monitoring points in the practical project analyzed the impact of the blocking dam.
