Map making is an important production activity, which is closely associated with human life and the scientific research, and its ultimate goal is completing map products. Modern digital map making revolves around the spatial data, and it relies on the professional graphic design software or geographic information system software. The functions of these two kinds of existing software focus on the spatial data collection, processing and analysis, while support for professional mapping function is limited.When using existing software for mapping, map designer needs to make a certain degree of thinking compromise. In order to complete a full map, map designer need to frequently switch between different softwares or interfaces of a same software. The whole map making process is complex. Complex operations largely limit the degree of automation of cartography, also bring inconvenience to the standardization of cartography. As a result of the model mechanism is not sound, there is no professional software for complete coverage of all aspects of the mapping process.In order to fill the blank of map model, this paper tries to establish an improved logical model, which is specially used for map making. This model is based on the most mature geographic information system, and it adds some new features in line with the cartography thinking. This model’s main content is still spatial data, but it mainly around the graphical expression of spatial information, and it focus on the convenient and efficient to complete the spatial data to the transformation of the plane map.This paper revolves around the establishment and demonstration of spatial data map model, the whole research process advances step by step, mainly completed following several aspects work:(1) This paper completes the graphical and mathematical expression of map. This part of work refers to the classical theory of cartography and the understanding of geographic information system thinking for related structures, according to the division mode of mathematical base, geographic features and decorative elements, dissects map content into collection objects with clear hierarchy.(2) This paper completes the structure design of spatial data map model. This part of work refers to the parts of the map’s hierarchy structure, adding the concept of conceptual design, ignoring the logical details which are less related with the expression of map, with Unified Modeling Language for describing, with object-oriented thinking for technological means, based on comprehensive considering properties and behaviors of each component when it is used to map making, abstracting and modeling the entire map, converts the static map components into logic classes which can influence each other.(3) This paper completes the data flow model diagram of spatial map model and the prototype system based on spatial data map model. This part of work refers to the structure design of the spatial data map model, based on the physical basis of an independent spatial database, saves class attributes and static parameters in database tables, simulates the flow of data in database tables combined with possible mapping operations.
