The protection of urban biodiversity has become a hot issue in recent years. Both the scientist and ordinary people paid much attention on it. As the important part of the urban biodiversity, the urban plant diversity has also aroused more and more concern. For a long time, the main issues about the urban plant diversity research in china are the improvement of the numbers and species of landscape plants. The research of urban plant diversity based on the urban habitat becomes a new perspective. The plant species of the original habitat depends upon the geomorphological features and climate environment of the habitat. And also, the decrease of the plant diversity resulted from the changes, losses or the fragmentation of the plant habitat, and the excessive use of the resources. Therefore, it is necessary to protect the urban plant diversity based on the urban habitat. The paper investigated and analyzed a number of habitat factors in the urban area and the built-up area of the city. Throughout the field researches and habitat mapping, the paper drawn habitat pattern of the study area and discussed the protection of the urban plant diversity.The main results are as follows:(1)To carry out the habitat analysis of two levels(the administrative regions and the built-up area), Drawn the habitat pattern of the both levels. Analyzed the habitat pattern, the habitat pattern index and its status in quo according to the habitat conditions.(2)By the investigations and statistical analysis of the plant diversity on the administrative regions and the built-up area of Xiaogan city, got the following data :A.There are 1164 species of vascular plants in Xiaogan city, which belonging to 631 genera and 170 families, among these, 49 species, 32 genera,25 families are fern; 26 species, 17 genera, 8 families are gymnosperm; 900 species, 479 genera, 113 families are angiosperm; 189 species, 103 genera, 24 families are monocots. There are 41 community types of terrestrial plant communities, which belonging to 13 kinds of formations and 12 kinds of vegetation forms. The aquatic plant can be divided into 3 types in accordance with the emergent plant communities, floating plant communities and submerged plant communities, which belonging to 9 community types.B. There are 421 plant species in built-up district, including 5 species of fern, 25 species of gymnosperm, 330 species of dicots and 62 species of monocots, which belonging to 298 genera and 114 families. From the composition analysis of the family and genus statistics, the Rosaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae, Liliaceae and Oleaceae have the obvious advantages. From the analysis of growth form, the proportion of evergreen species and deciduous species are unsatisfactory, the kinds of evergreen trees should be increased. And also, the application of vine should be paid more attention.(3) Based on the current habitat situation of Xiaogan city, this article builds a habitat suitability evaluation system, combing different classification of the suitability to analyse the current plant situation on each habitat and the results of habitat suitability and habitat pattern can be the support of plant diversity protection in Xiaogan city.
