With the deepening of the underground space development and construction inour country, the ground penetrating radar detection experienced a rapid developmentas a non-destructive testing technology. The ground penetrating radar, with its highresolution, fast, economic, flexible, convenient, accurate positioning, section intuitiveand real-time image display, etc, has been widely applied in various engineering fieldsand has a good application prospect.According to the engineering practice experience, using the ground penetratingradar is easy to get the reflection of the subterranean cavitation, pipeline cavity recordfrom the scene. But there is great difficulty if we want to get further informationabout volume of detecting targets.Just because these defects detection at present arestill limited to qualitative interpretation, without quantitative estimates of diseaseseverity, it is difficult to assess and monitor the quality condition of the undergroundaccurately and deeply, and make an effective assessment about the scope and quantityof reinforcement of the defects, thus we can not let alone take some specific measuresto remedy in advance. Therefore, it has an important significance to establish a kindof calculation model of mathematical structure to measure equivalent volume of thetarget according to the ground penetrating radar detection. In the experiment, we selects different specimens embedded in the soil ofdifferent depth to simulate the defects of subterranean cavitation. Basing on theequivalent size principle, we suppose the target body as a sphere. So we can calculatethe radar cross section of the equivalent sphere in the optical region, namely theequivalent radar cross section of target body. By ground penetrating radar detectionand based on the revised radar equation at the same time, this paper deduces acalculation formula to calculate the equivalent radar cross section according to thedepth of the target body, the target body image area on ground penetrating radar imageand the center frequency of the ground penetrating radar antenna. With this, we canestablish a kind of calculation model of mathematical structure for the groundpenetrating radar detection measuring equivalent volume of the target. It enables us toestimate the underground disease severity quantitatively, such as the size of thecavitation, scope and the trend of extension, etc. With such quantitative indicators tomeasure the severity of these defects,we can assess and monitor the quality condition of the underground accurately and deeply. Then we can take some pertinent measuresto remedy in advance which provides a scientific basis for the implementation of thereinforcement scheme. It also has very important significance for engineering practice.
