Water is the lifeline of human beings. Besides, people’s daily life is inseparable from thewater. However, shortage of water resources is in serious condition around the world. At thesame time, China is an agricultural country. But the traditional way of artificial irrigation isunreasonable which result in severe waste of water resources. This is one of the causes ofwater shortage. In addition, the agriculture is facing the adjustment in production mode andplanting structure in our country. The application and development of water saving irrigationsystem is an important way to realize the irrigation of informatization in our country. Thedefects on traditional water saving irrigation in timeliness and dynamic can be solved bycombining GIS technology and the Internet of things.First, this article introduces the research background, purpose and significance of watersaving irrigation system and the development present situation at home and abroad, etc. Andon this basis we established the research objectives, contents and technical route in this paper.Then we introduce the concept, main features of the Internet of things and the keytechnologies. Second, we not only research the water saving irrigation iot application systembut also analyze and summarize the multivariate data in the process of integration, dataprocessing, storage, and decision analysis technology and WebGIS technology which areapplied to the whole system.Third, aiming at how to implement a field water-saving irrigation’s intelligent controland the Internet of things application system based on GIS. We has carried on the overalldesign in this article. On the basis of demand analysis, We realize the remote monitoring ofcore model of demonstration area in typical field of weather, soil moisture and growth ofcereal crop seedlings using GIS technology and the Internet of things. Through theconstruction of high efficiency, low energy consumption, low investment and multi-functional intelligent irrigation in open field engineering to achieve real-time monitoring, intelligentanalysis, automatic control, fine management, so as to realize the efficient utilization of fieldirrigation water and precision irrigation.At last, the implementation and application of the system based on the overall designmainly includes GIS functions of system, monitoring function, irrigation control function,forecast decision function, statistical analysis function and the function of basic datamanagement. The problems based on theoretical research and appeared in the process ofsystem development are summarized. Moreover, the future development of the system isprospected.
