Nanjing ChangJiang Tanker Corporation (abbreviated Nanjing Tanker Corp) is large-scale specialized shipping enterprise affiliated to the China ChangJiang National Shipping Group. It set out to engage in transporting petroleum and petrochemical in 1975. It grows with the development of ChangJiang regional economy and petroleum enterprises. Nanjing Tanker Corp has achieved an accumulate 400 million tons loads since 20 years and contributed a lot to the development of national economy and petroleum industries. The economic globalization and the persistent growth of the global economy have affiliated the development of world trade and shipping integrated, it provides a great opportunity to the development of Nanjing Tanker Corp, meanwhile Nanjing Tanker Corp faces a great challenge of the fact that domestic petroleum shipping will be replaced by pipeline. Nanjing Tanker Corp should draw a relevant long-term strategy according to its competitive advantage, this has a realistic meaning to its survive and development.This paper has investigated the competitive strategy of Nanjing Tanker Corp. it firstly introduces the status and problems of Nanjing Tanker Corp, secondly, it elaborates the theories of competitive strategy. Then it analyzes the external environment of Nanjing Tanker Corp on one hand, it points out that Nanjing Tanker Corp has the good development opportunity owning to the fast growth of imported crude oil and domestic oil transportation markets, and it also faces the influence of ChangJiang pipeline construction, the opportunity and challenge are coexistent. On the other hand, through analyzing the internal environment such as the organization structures, marketing abilities, human resource and finance, it points out that the company has some advantages like operation scheduling, safety management, financing and so on, but meanwhile, it has some deficiencies like mechanism, talent structure, experience of international operations, et al. It makes clear that speeding the development is the right strategy choice of Nanjing Tanker Corp through the SWOT analysis, and points out that the focus strategy based on the cost leadership is the right competitive strategic positioning. Finally, it further discusses the strategy implementation of Nanjing Tanker Corp.
