Increasing technical complexity of project, coupled with low quality and productivity in construction and great intensity in competition all create a demand for new technologies and methods in AEC industry. Computer-integrated construction (CIC) is then proposed as a promising technology to enhance the productivity and efficiency of the A/E/C industry into the 21st century. Therefore, CIC is currently a high-priority area of research and development in many countries. This paper advances the standpoint that the application of computer integrated construction in Chinese constructor companies should put emphasis on such problem as information integration, control integration and organization integration. First, based on the current studies of CIC, this paper furthers the definition of Computer integrated construction, and develops a integration framework for Computer-integrated construction system, which is illustrated as formed by three independent dimensions, i.e. Project life-cycle, Business functions and involved parties. In this system of coordinates, every geometric representation has its implication of CIC integration, and represents for a corresponding phase of CIC implementation. Second, the paper analyses the poor information communication conditions existing in many contractor companies. and proposes the method of using a unified Project Breakdown structure to standardize the configuration of other breakdown structures employed by different business functions, so that all the functional information, i.e. schedule, cost and quality information, can be integrated in the same breakdown unit. Third, the paper synthesizes three typical integrated project control models, and combines them into a new planning control system on the basis of schedule control, aiming for enhancement of project control and continuous improvement of the quality of system itself. Finally, the paper detailedly explains the concept of virtual construction, and analyses two core elements of virtual construction —information communication and cooperation, of which the best approach to achieve has been developed respectively.
