This paper discusses the present development in the relevant industry of food machinery and proposes that technological innovation is the everlasting driver to corporate development. As the main carrier of technological innovation, the medium and small sized enterprises face intensified market competitions and challenges. They must consider how to seek survival and development through technological innovation, improving product competitiveness to avoid losing the market, continuously enhancing competency to stand firmly in the market, and gradually growing more powerful, more professional and larger. One of the fundamental aims for the developmental strategy of modern enterprises is to improve corporate competitiveness, while such competitiveness is a joint-force resulted from co-functioning of multiple factors, where technological innovation is the key. To improve their ability in technological innovation is the basic solution for medium and small sized enterprise to respond to market competitions.For the case selected in this paper, KW is a food machinery manufacturer established in 1994 with a registered capital of RMB 500K and initial staff no more than 10 persons. When KW was established, it faced various unfavorable factors such as adverse economic situations, stringent fiscal policy, intensified market competitions and industry saturation etc. On the other hand, the enterprise experienced a difficult development period due to erroneous developmental strategy set in its preliminary stage. Fortunately, the enterprise adjusted its strategy in time and determined its way of corporate development based on technological innovation, aiming at a vacancy in the market, i.e. rice noodle production line. It realized successful product development and continued innovations, thus changed the situation immediately. After that, KW insists on technological innovations to meet market requirements - find market demand, and satisfy this demand; and then find consumers, sell to them. Through improving original production processes and equipment to develop a market of derivative products and new products, gradually form a changeable pool of building blocks - unique non-standard design ability, to form core competitiveness and to realize adaptation to demands, so as to lay a sound foundation to the survival and development of enterprise.This change in strategy brings about very different corporate performances, which provides us an opportunity for in-depth thinking, helping us realize the significance of technological innovation that meets market demand. Furthermore, in view of size, the enterprise is a small sized private company. The number and percentage of such companies are huge in the Chinese economy, especially in the region of the Pearl River Delta. To research it as a typical case will be of general meaning, and worthy of popularization and used as a reference.This paper also focuses on the status quo and problems existing in technological innovations in medium and small sized Chinese producers of food machinery. Based on the realities in China, this paper discusses the characteristics and advantages for medium and small sized enterprises to make technological innovations, summarizes theirinnovation patterns, analyses characteristics of different patterns, and proposes pertinent solutions to difficulties. Based on the theoretical analysis in marketing strategy and market competition status and tendency, this paper suggests a way of development that suits medium and small sized enterprises - to be a small giant enterprise that is "small but professional, small but essential, small but flexible". In the present society, none pattern can always remain unchanged. The pattern of technological innovations for medium and small sized enterprises in China is not mature and sound yet, which still needs research and exploration in practice, so as to promote the unremitting development and renewal of their pattern of technological innovations.
