As the 3G has just started in China, both stability and coverage of 3G can not fully replace the existing 2G networks; Therefore, the multi-mode base-band chip which supports both 2G and 3G have a huge potential market. Developing an IP core for the Modem of EDGE baseband is not only makes the modular management of multi-mode base-band chip easier but also provides the cell phone manufacturers with differentiated solutions. In order to meet the requirements of base-band chip design for a certain company, this thesis gives deep insights into the ASIC design, and completes the work from system simulation to RTL design for the key modules, and verifies them on FPGA at last.At first, this paper proposes the design requirements. Then it developes the MATLAB toolbox EDGEsim to simulate the system, which helps us to assess the complexity of the algorithms, such as GMSK solution called Viterbi balance and 8PSK based on LMS adaptive filtering decision feedback equalizer, etc. and provides the testing sources for the module design for hardware. The hardware uses an architecture of "BPU + CMU + MMU" to greatly compress the area and meet the needs of data throughput. The design of Modem of baseband will be downloaded to the FPGA that with RF chip and the protocol stack to complete the modulation and demodulation , using the loop-back mode of CMU200 with B-17 option to do the BER detection which generally accepted in this industry. Finally, this essay gives the synthesized result, this design costs 12.1 million gates approximately under the technology of TSMC90nm which means a 30% off of area cost to the previous version of a certain company GSM Modem, and this design works at 52MHZ could complete the work of DSP solutions which works at 78MHZ.
