Mill &Sons refers to James Mill and John Stuart Mill. In this paper, study of thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons thinking is mainly on James Mill's book"Liberty of the Press"and John Stuart Mill's book"On Liberty". The thought of freedom of the press is closely linked with private rights, and the thought of freedom of press of Mill&Son as a classic template of thought of West freedom of the press, plays an important role in West freedom of expression system, promoting the development of press freedom in the modern times, having a great impact on the field of information and politics and society. Therefore, through analyzing the meaning of the thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons, this text hopes provide a reference to the development of contemporary Chinese news media, democracy and nomocracy.The research method is to use perspectives of utilitarianism , classical liberalism and critical Marxism to discuss the content and essentials of thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons, to compare both similarities and differences between James Mill and John Stuart Mill of thought of freedom of the press, to analyze their thought and edification to modern historically and critically, in order to objectively and dialectically valuate their thought. This paper is divided to seven chapters. Chapter 1 is a brief overview of the historical background of thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons; Chapter 2 is a analysis of the thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons as inheritance and development of utilitarianism of Bentham; Chapter 3 and 4 is a analysis of the thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons respectively under each utilitarian view; Chapter 5 and 6 is an analysis of the thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons respectively from classical liberalism viewing angle; Chapter 7 is a compare of both similarities and differences between James Mill and John Stuart Mill of thought of freedom of the press, also a historical and critical analysis, pointing out the edification for modern. Can be found from the research, although the thought of freedom of the press of Mill&Sons is West classical thinking of freedom of the press, it's conducive for promoting China's news media, democracy and nomocracy for better development, with the principle of making the past serve the present and foreign things serve China and through dialectical critical analysis of essence of the thought.
