Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is a new-style network coupled with the rapid development of the wireless communication. It is regarded as an effective solution for ubiquitous last-mile broadband wireless access. WMN has great value and widely used in practice in kinds of fields and becomes the hotspot problem in scientific field. There, the assignment and management of channel is important to optimizing the performance of capacity of WMN. So, taking use of the multi-radio and multi-channel will be the most resultful way. This paper pays more attention to improving the network capacity of the entire WMN, and mainly discusses two aspects, namely network capacity model and improving network capacity by assigning multi-radio and multi-channel.Included mathematical programming,graph and network, mathematical tools is the technical foundation of systems science. Also, included system analysis modeling,network planning methods, these methods and procedures are embodiments of the system science in engineering technology. The study of channel assignment relates to many areas of WMN. Making use of system engineering and methods, processing investigation, analysis and research on totality of WMN, the best method, which optimizes the performance of the system, will be found. Under the premise of satisfying network's connectivity, by kinds of strategies–binding the radio between nodes, binding the channel for radios and channel switching, channel assignment optimizes a data communications for the network. In addition, channel assignment can also be realized by the technology of topology control,directional antennal and smart antennal, and so on.This paper describes the Wireless Mesh Network,the concept of channel assignment and their related concepts which have effect to the performance of WMN. Based on the multi-radio wireless mesh network architecture, by summarizing and drawing lessons from current algorithms, we proposed a centralized channel assignment algorithm. Considered the actual implementation of networking can be achieved and the consistent with the existing 802.11s protocol compatibility, the algorithm reduces interference in taking full account of the link load and the link capacity balance. The channel assignment algorithm proceedes with topology control first of all, which can simplify the network topology and determine the priority of the network node. And then, the algorithm carries out specific channel assignment according to the priority of nodes. Through establishing the centralized channel adjustment and the recovery strategy for the network, the network connectivity and stability will be guaranteed better. In conclusion, based on NS2 network simulation platform, the proposed channel assignment algorithm is evaluated in a variety of network scenarios. Simulation results show that the algorithm makes significantly enhance network capacity and other properties, which is an effective algorithm.
