In recent years, the data traffic, represented by IP increased dramatically while network service characteristics varied more and more. The self-similar, dynamical and burst natures of data traffic are totally different from those of voice traffic. The difference of services proposed different demands for optical network. The methods that how network sense the change of service properties, and adjust network parameters to satisfy the service demands, have been a hot research domain at present.Firstly, this paper researched service-awareness mechanism, including service property awareness and service traffic awareness. By the service awareness mechanism, network can know the service property in real-time, and provides different service according to network condition, to improve the network efficiency. Edge node is responsible for the service-aware function. Then this paper proposed the demands analysis for edge node.According to the demands analysis for edge node, this paper proposed the system design and FPGA design. The module of edge node includes control module and data processing module. The control module is responsible for the burst control packet generation, wavelength scheduling, etc. The data processing module is responsible for service sensing, switching and aggregation, burst packet processing, etc. In the design, this paper considered the practical problems, such as forward delay, meta-stability, clock skew, and proposed solutions and improvement methods.After proposing design scheme, this paper verified the functions of edge node by simulation and real-system test, including service-sensing, Ethernet data processing, dynamic wavelength scheduling, and priority-oriented aggregation, etc.In all, this paper lays emphasis on the design and implementation of edge node, on the base of service-awareness research on edge node of optical network. Innovation mainly appears in the following aspects for this paper.(?) Proposed the design scheme for the experimental system based on the research and analysis of service-awareness in optical network.(?) Proposed solutions on the edge node hardware system for meta-stability, clock skew and forward delay problems in design.(?) Successfully completed the functional simulation of the design, and implemented in on hardware.
