The location-based service is growing as the success of the global positioning system (GPS). However the GPS fails in indoor environments because the signals received from satellites often suffer severe interference. The radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is getting more and more consideration to be the optimal selection for indoor positioning systems because of its contactless, none line of sight, low cost and hight accuracy. Recent years, the research for indoor positioning has made a great progress especially for the wireless technology and positioning algorithm, but as for the business application, it is just started. How to guide the companies to develope their positioning projects, how to dig further applications based on the location service, are the urgent problems to solve in order to further develop indoor positioning and extend business applying. This paper started with a real RFID positioning project, researched on some of the key problems in the process of system developing. In this paper we studied some key issues including framework designing, algorithm designing and applications in the process of developing RFID indoor positioning systems. This will help the company develop better indoor positioning systesms and make better use of the location services. According to a real positioning project we did many research on the common framework of wireless positioning systems, and defined the functions of each layer and the relationships between them. We also came up with a set of evaluation indicators of RFID indoor positioning system which will make the design and evaluation of positioning system very convenient. Based on these indicators we did some comparative analysis on some of the wireless technologies such as GPS, Wi-Fi, RFID and UWB. We researched a method to combine two positioning algorithms together and created an improved algorithm in order to solve special needs of some application such as in different areas require different location accuracy. As to the positioning system application we studied the further application of the location-based service, we offered a client classification model and a product classification model which will mining more valuable information for the company so as to improve their decision-making capacity and management. In this paper we first analyzed the RFID techonlogy and its application in the indoor positioning areas, the main wireless technologies and algorithms for indoor positioning and some common indoor positioning systems. After that we represented the background and objective of our study. According to the research and a real project we bring up a three-layer framework for indoor positioning system including hardware layer, positioning engine layer and application layer. At the same time we also established a set of evaluation indicators for RFID indoor positioning systems which helped the designing and evaluation of indoor positioning systems. Next we improved the fingerprint algorithm to solve the problem of different areas require different positioning accuracy and reached a balance between the accuracy requirements and the overall system costs. We also did some research on the data mining application in the future store with location-based services, we presented a client classification model and a product classification model according to clients' shopping route and time. At the last part of this paper we described the designing and implementation of the future store indoor positioning system, including the design of the system framework, establishment of the hardware equipments and development of the software system.
