An advance Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system should meet the requirements of high efficiency, high credibility and high stability which are directly related with the systematic performance. In this paper, a study of communication systems based on 1394 bus protocol and industrial Ethernet bus protocol was carried out. Firstly, 1394 bus protocol and industrial Ethernet bus protocol and their data frames were introduced as the theoretical basis. Secondly, two communication systems applied in CNC system were designed based on these two protocols. The industrial Ethernet system was the basis of the structure of future advanced system, while IEEE 1394 system was the foundation of high performance of upper layer for the future advanced system. And the details of the system structure, module hardware and software designs were also stated in this paper. At last, the difference between the performance of the two communication systems through series of experiments and theories was compared and analyzed.Both communication systems are composed of upper computer, front communication module, key-board module and IO module. The upper computer takes charge of commanding and receives the feedback from CNC machine. Front module transfers the data between upper computer and CNC machine. Keyboard module scans the order of CNC machine panel and transfers the data to upper computer. IO module provides CNC system connecting other equipment connecting with extend interface.Each module in 1394 system were made up of DSP, TMS320F2812 from TI, 1394 controller, TSB43AA82 from TI and its function circuit. The module could connect to the adjacent modules through the two interfaces in TSB43AA82. The topology is chain structure.The module in industrial Ethernet system is made up of DSP, TMS320F2812 from TI, industrial Ethernet controller, AX88783 from ASIX and its function circuit. Different with the common industrial Ethernet systems, hub and switch are not employed in the system which simplified the system structure a lot.1394 systems work well through debugging and testing. The real time performance, reliability and stability are all stated through experiments in this paper. As a result, the performance was studied and analyzed.
