Currently, all the navigation products in market are realized by global positioning system and map navigation controls to achieve the location and the display of the position of the navigation terminals. On the one hand, the global positioning system is vulnerable to the satellite signal conditions and the environment, which has the disadvantages of low positioning accuracy in short time and positioning blind etc.; On the other hand, most of the navigation systems are developed by use of the map controls causing a significant increase in cost, which is not conducive to the integration of system functions.The work in this article is sponsored by the Innovation Fund For Technology-Based Firms In Hubei Province(Item Number: 2007BHS022).Based on the analyses of the development of the embedded navigation system status in domestic and overseas at present, an embedded navigation system based on S3C2440 and Windows CE 5.0 system is designed in view of the disadvantages of the current navigation system which is not reliable for its single location and conducive to the integration of system functions by using of the map control which will result the increasing of the costs.S3C2440 is adopted as the core processor for the navigation terminal, where a combined positioning technology using GPS and digital compass is applied. The location information is displayed on the LCD in the navigation terminal and transmitted via GPRS to a remote monitoring center.Considering the existence of the shortcoming of blind spots of the global positioning system, the hardware of the digital compass using magnetic sensor and acceleration sensor is designed. Meanwhile, independent orientation through digital compass is realized by the use of information obtained from the pedometers and the DR algorithm.As the development of the electronic map by use of the map control will bring a lot of inconvenience, independent development of the desktop electronic map and embedded electronic map is realized through Visual C++ 6.0 and Embedded Visual C++ 4.0 aimed at the map data in Shape file format.The experiments show that the electronic map displays well, which can complete the basic navigation functions; Blind spots caused by the global positioning system are eliminated by digital compass at the navigation terminal, and the transmitting efficiency of the location information through the Internet is greatly improved.
