The work presented in this thesis is partially supported by a crosswise project'on-line thickness gauge of rubber with a large measurement range and high accuracy'. This thesis focuses on the reflection-type pneumatic sensor with a large measurement range.The design method of the reflective pneumatic sensor with a large measurement range based on finite element simulation has been presented in this thesis. Based on hydrodynamics, the finite element model of the flow field of the sensor is constructed. Using finite element analysis software COMSOL, the influence of the aerodynamic and configuration parameters on the sensitivity of the sensor is obtained. A sensor has been designed based on the simulation results, and fabricated. It has been tested with different configuration parameters, and the experimental results show that the design method based on finite element simulation is effective in the design of the reflective pneumatic sensor with a large measurement range.The sensor has been calibrated with experiments. The measurement range of the sensor is about 4mm~7mm, with 51.7mV/mm in sensitivity, less than 0.06mm in static error and 0.02mm in resolution.In addition, in order to improve the performance, accuracy and sensitivity of the pneumatic measurement system, the common sources of static error are analyzed and approaches to dealing with them are also presented.A reflective pneumatic sensor with large measurement range has been designed based on the simulation results using finite element analysis, and it has been calibrated. Experimental results show that it fully satisfies the engineering requirement. The work presented in this thesis not only broadens the application of pneumatic sensors, but also sets up the theoretical and experimental basis for the following research of the project.
