As a kind of error-resilient coding technique, multiple description coding (MDC) is the solution against the problem of packet loss in unstable channel, especially in the wireless network. Different from traditional methods, MDC can achieve good robustness with keeping real-time. As the development of 3G technique, video transmission has been a main business of wireless network. So, video MDC becomes a focused research subject. Limited by the amount of video data, video MDC is often combined with a specific compression algorithm. Because of its high compression ratio and network adaptability, H.264 is called as a new generation of video compression standard. Therefore, it is important to investigate the MDC scheme based on H.264. Wireless network terminal is described as an important multi-application platform. TI's C6000 family of DSP chips, with its high performance and multimedia computing capability, is increasingly being used as a terminal core of the system. Exploiting the TMS320DM642 DSP development platform, the research and implementation of MDC based on H.264 are presented in this thesis. The main work of this thesis is summarized as follows.1. A scheme of multiple description coding based on H.264 which can inhibit the drift-error is proposed. By using the method of motion information replication in encoder, this scheme effectively reduce calculation consumption and error accumulation. And by employing the adaptive algorithm of bicubic interpolation in decoder, it could recover the missing residual so that to increase estimation precision.2. A multiple description coding scheme based on scalar quantization is proposed. Using asymmetrical scalar quantization and generating descriptions based on mixed organization method, the problem of redundance adjustment can be solve. This scheme has changed little on the H.264 process and realize easily both in encode and decode.3. System migration aiming at the TMS320DM642 development platform is performed. The two MDC scheme is verified to be feasible. And been optimized by a variety of methods, it raises coding efficiency so significantly to meet the real-time requirements.
