In recent years, video compression, as an important branch of computer multimedia technology, is gradually becoming a hot research point. The most fundamental purpose of video compression is to reduce the number of video stream bits, and ensuring the video quality at the same time. H.264 standard is the latest video compression coding standard, the coding efficiency has been improved significantly, compared to other video compression coding standard, so it has a good application prospects.Motion estimation is a main video compression; it has been widely used in today's international video compression standard. It is an effective method to remove the video data time redundancy, which directly affects the performance of coding efficiency and image quality. However, due to the computational complexity of motion estimation, the time of encoder based on motion estimation mainly was spent by the calculation of motion estimation, especially in the H.264 encoder, which use the high-precision and the variable block size motion estimation. Therefore, developing fast and efficient motion estimation algorithm has become a research hotspot. In the paper, based on the new technical features in H.264 standard and existing H.264 motion estimation algorithm research, this paper proposed a new motion estimation algorithm, PDSH motion estimation search algorithm. According to the simulation result, PDSH algorithm has improved the efficiency of H.264 without reducing the image's PSNR.
