This thesis studies user interface ("UI") of a school library management system according to theories of human-computer interaction to increase usability of the system and to meet requirements of the system users of the client. The study is based on the paralleled UI requirements investigation, UI analysis and design as well as UI testing. It focuses on particular issues of UI analysis and design identified through requirements investigation such that the study is purposive, comprehensive and reliable. It proposes to evaluate UI in terms of friendliness with the end user's major, professional custom and group preference. According to the study, the UI analysis and design need to be conducted by view of the end user and the logic of the system operation regulated by the principles and work flow for UI analysis and design. This theory is improved according to the UI testing done by carefully planned use cases and testing chart. It is concluded that UI, as part of the system, should go alongside with the processing function of the system during the system development in an interactive and coordinative way so that the system can be developed as a whole. Nevertheless, relative independence of UI from the processing function of the system should also be highlighted or else the objective requirements of human-computer interaction will be ignored and little will be dedicated to friendly UI design and usability of the system. The research reveals that the relationship between UI and the processing function of the system in analysis and design and the freedom of UI designing can be determined in functionality and aesthetics. Functionality and aesthetics of UI as well as natures of the system such as responding time and comprehensiveness of processing function jointly determine usability of the software to a particular type of end user. The above theory has been tested in the project and the proposed principles and methodology of UI analysis and design have theoretical and practical values. It's particularly appealing to readers that the end user's major, professional custom and group preference should be used as the standard for friendly UI analysis and design in terms of both functionality and aesthetics, and it's interesting to calculate the UI quantity in need by means of statistics chart based on UI framework and UI interaction diagrams.
