Research On Model Of Human-human Interaction Interface And Its Applications

Group work can be divided into two parts: individual work and work on relationship among group members or their activities. Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) emphasizes on how to address that relationship. CSCW systems or applications support group members interact and work with others through computers. Our group started up CSCW research in 1994. Several research on CSCW we experienced have made us realize the fact that interfaces of CSCW systems or applications are very different from Human-computer Interaction Interfaces (HCII), especially in aspects of characteristic, function and requirement. Just as human-computer interaction is embodied in HCII, human-human interaction is mainly reflected through the interface of a CSCW system or application. There are some concepts on the interface of a CSCW system or application at present, such as Multi-user Interface, Group Interface and so on. We call the interface of a CSCW system or application Human-human Interaction Interface (HHII), for the sake of mirroring connotation of CSCW more clearly and for the convenience of corresponding to HCII. Some researchers have made excellent work on interfaces of CSCW systems or applications and put forward some concepts and models on the interface. Their work, however, are deficient in answering the two questions as follows: (1) What makes human-human interaction different from human-computer interaction? (2) Can models on HCII and their extensions guide the development of interfaces of CSCW systems or applications in effect? The studies on the two questions in depth will be benefit for understanding HHII profoundly and guiding the development of HHII with higher quality more efficiently.This paper focuses on the research of models of HHII, combined with several National 863 Hi-tech projects.
