The Design And Implementation Of Exercise Database For College Common Courses

Traditional method of testing usually costs too much time and energy in terms of question setting, paper printing, exam administrating and exam paper marking. As we know, university students in China today must take many required courses. At my workplace Zhejiang Gongshang University, there are at least 10000 students sitting for exams on such courses each semester. This causes much work load on the part of the teachers and other staff concerned. Computer network technology and testing database system offer a good solution to the problems and troubles caused by traditional method of testing.This paper originates from Zhejiang Gongshang University research project of reforming university common required course. The paper first surveys the recent research of testing database system at home and abroad and discusses the concept of Web database and the attaching technology between Web and database. Then, the paper analyzes the shortcomings of C/S model, and explores the network structure, characteristics and development stages of B/S model. Finally, the paper, based on the principles of CGI, API, ASP, JSP, PHP, attempts to devise and implement a testing management information system as a subsystem of remote education based Web, taking the LINUX as OS, Apache as the Web server, MYSQL as the database server.The system proposed is based on B/S model, comprising teacher subsystem, student subsystem and administrator subsystem and performing the function of question data managing, automatic paper forming, online testing and automatic paper grading. By comparing traditional testing and online testing, this paper explores such key technology as generating and managing of questions base paper forming, automatic paper grading, etc. The system provides security in the tie-tier authorized fashion including administrator, teacher and student. The administrator is responsible for system maintenance and addition or deletion users. The teacher is responsible for managing question database, forming papers, evaluating testing and so on. The student sit for tests and inquires test scores.
