With great technological development and social progress, electronic and electrical equipments have been more and more widely used in urban area. It brings a huge convenience to people's lives, at the same time, also produces a complex electromagnetic environment. When the electromagnetic radiation increases to certain intensity, it will be detrimental to human's health, and also interfere with electronic equipments. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring the electromagnetic environment within the region of city. This paper designed and developed an automatic measuring system for regional electromagnetic environment, aimed at monitoring and recording the environmental electromagnetic radiation level automatically. The system uses the virtual instrumentation technology as the platform, combined with geographic information system, possessing three main functions: data acquisition, graphical display, and results treatment and preservation. With the characteristics of easy use, versatile and scalable, this system can highly efficiently monitor the electromagnetic environment. After the completion of system development, we measured and analyzed the environmental electromagnetic radiation level in urban area of Xi'an, obtained real-time data and drew up the electromagnetic pollution map and the isoline map with equal field intensity. These results show that, in the frequency range from 890MHz to 960MHz, the average field strength is 0.2118V/m in Xi'an urban area, which is below the national standard limit (12V/m). The field strengths of the areas with high greening rate are significantly lower than these of other regions. The traffic arteries, commercial and industrial areas' field strengths are higher than residential areas'.
