On the basis of Saussure's Sign System and Bakhtin's Theory of Dialogism, French semiotician theorist Julia Kristeva coined the term "Intertextuality" in 1969. She holds that any text is the absorption and transformation of other texts. Here "the other texts" means "intertext", which could refer either to previous or later works, or the works of the same age with the present works; while "absorption" and "transformation" could be realized either through parody, citation, and so on, or though readers'intertextual reading or analyzers' analysis. It was limited to literary critique, but recently it receives widespread attention in discourse analysis. In 1981, Beugrande and Dressler introduced intertextuality into text linguistics, which provides new theoretical perspective for linguistic study of intertextuality. However, few research studies intertextuality in English news and the readers'role and function is neglected, so this thesis does the investigation from this new perspective. At the same time, the readers'role is analyzed.Intertextuality is divided into specific intertextuality and genre intertexuality by Xin Bin. Based on this classification, this thesis studies specific intertextuality of English news from the perspectives of citation, allusion, cliche and parody and analyzes how these four aspects manifest specific intertextuality in English news; genre intertextuality is analyzed from the perspectives of genre, structure and culture. Based on this, to analyze the manifestation of intertextuality in China Daily, this thesis randomly chooses 24 news items from this newspaper to analyze its specific intertextuality and genre intertextuality. It is shown that both specific intertextuality and genre intertextuality are employed in China Daily, in which their frequencies are different. For specific intertextuality. indirect reported speech is frequently used and the origin of the reported speech is clearly accounted. The scope of reported verb is narrow; the neutral verb "say" is used most frequently, the second frequently used verbs are "command" and "emphasis". For genre intertextuality, syntactic level plays important role in the news reporting in China Daily. Figure of speech is rarely used in the newspaper; embedding, hyphen and simplified sentences are the main techniques used in sentence structure; midget words are usually used in the title. At last, this thesis summarizes the findings of this thesis, puts forward the limitations and provides some suggestions for future study on intertextuality.
