Research On Temporal Database Design Methodology Based On UML And Relational Model

As the widespread use of database technology, it is becoming mandatory to process temporal data in information system. In order to describe the temporal data, the concept of temporal database is proposed. The history, present and future of objects are recorded in temporal database which reflects the development of real world. As there is no commercial temporal database management system, the research on temporal database design methodology based on mainstream database management system has practical significance.The basic concepts as well as the situation of research of temporal database are introduced and analyzed in this thesis. Based on the existing research, a new temporal conceptual model UTCM is introduced in this thesis by extending the class diagram of UML, which can record bi-temporal information. UTCM is independent of the implementation platform. UTCM can support the conceptual modeling of all kinds of application area while independent of the implementation platform of database. The bi-temporal information can be recorded in UTCM and it is convenient to map a UTCM conceptual model to relational database schema.Both the design principle and basic components of UTCM are introduced in this thesis. The conceptual design methodology of temporal database based on UTCM is introduced with the example of information system of wage policy.The logical design of temporal database is discussed in this thesis. In the design methodology of temporal database based on UTCM, the logical design process is equal to mapping a UTCM model to relational database schema. A set of mapping rules are introduced with the example of information system of wage policy.The update and query of temporal database which is implemented in a relational database are discussed in this thesis. The algorithm of insert, delete, update is introduced also with the example of information system of wage policy.
