Atmospheric laser communication is the direct bi-directional transmission of voice, data, images and other information, using laser beam as a carrier of information transmission and atmosphere as a transmission medium in the space.When the laser is transmitted in the atmosphere, it is inevitably to be effected by a variety of natural factors. In order to achieve the desired bit error rate target, the use of error control coding must also be used to further reduce the error rate. RS code is currently one of the most effective and widely used error control coding, which can correct not only burst errors, but also random errors, particularly suited to correct burst errors.This paper first describes the atmospheric laser communication system, Under normal circumstances, in the atmosphere optical communication system,16-PPM encoding is used to implement the sourse coding, In order to make the source coding and the channel coding closely combined to reduce the system bit error rate, we can choose to use GF (17) domain RS code as the error-correcting code atmospheric optical communication system. Main tasks are as follows:(1)studies the necessarity of introducing RS codes in the atmospheric laser communication system according to the nature of RS codes, explained the concept, nature of the linear block code and the cyclic codes in detail.(2)derives irreducible polynomials of GF (17) domain whose power is≤2 from the theoretical knowledge of elementary algebra, and constructed the RS (16,10) code based on GF (17) domain.(3)studies the encoding and decoding algorithm of RS code based on GF (17) domain, and combines with 16-PPM to realize of RS (16,10) code encoding and decoding process with the use of MATLAB, at last,analyses the results of simulation.This paper theoretically achieves RS code of atmospheric laser communication system based on GF (17) domain, the structured RS (16,10) code can correct three errors, but it is not practically applicated in the atmosphere laser communication system, combining this RS code with the system to detect the error correction performance can be the follow-up work.
