A wireless Ad hoc network is a collection of wireless nodes that are self-configured to form a network without the aid of any existing infrastructure. Since it has survivability and self-healing capability, it is widely used in battlefield, rescuing and other emergency situations.Ad hoc network management is becoming a challenging research work due to the network's properties such as wireless communication, node movements, and multi-hop routing. Hierarchical and distributed network management architecture is suitable for ad hoc network management because it is flexible, and it can reduce management overhead and improve management efficiency. Cluster is the basic structure in this kind of management architecture, therefore the technique for clustering and cluster maintaining is a key technology to implement an ad hoc management system.The main contents of this thesis are as follows. Firstly, we expand the MIB-II by adding managed objects related to clustering, then we develop the clustering protocol which selects the cluster head based on nodes'identifications, their remaining energies and their security level, the corresponding cluster maintaining protocol is also implemented. We also build a test bed Ad hoc network, the result shows that both protocols are capable of adapting to the network's dynamic changes, and they guarantee the efficiency of the network management. All these protocols and their functions pass the test on the test bed network, and meet the design goal of the project.
