Fonts Design Of The International Phonetic Alphabet Based On OpenType And Chinese Rare Characters In Phonology Classical Literatures

This article is a graduate design to solve two urgent problems that need be solved in the digitization process of linguistics field.The first problem is mading a OpenType IPA font.Comparing with other fonts which use Unicde encoding,Professor Pan's IpaPanNew font is one of fonts that wildly used not only use in internal linguistics field but also in HongKong,Taiwan and Japan. Due to the fonts made in TureType, some Phonetic symbols look unbeautiful and produce confusion in computer.The latest OpenType font technology can solve the deficiencies of TureType fonts.According to Professor Pan's advices,this design try to change IpaPanNew fonts to OpenType fonts.I hope that this work will do some help to linguistics field and my crude remarks may draw forth by abler people. This article have a detail of IPA,Unicode encoding and fonts technology,and the meathod how to change and design the OpenType fonts.The second problem is mading a Chinese rare character set.In Unicode CJK character set,there are ExtA,ExtB,ExtC already.But in linguistics field we often use many characters which are not included in Unicod CJK,such as words in Classical Literature or localism.This article will find the characters which appear in《LeiPian》,《GuJinYunHuiJuYao》,《JiYun》in contrast to Unicode CJK fonts,and list the characters which are not included in Unicode CJK.We will make a character set of the characters, give a possible method to resolve problems of linguistics field application.At the same time,we provide this character set to National Information Industry to apply for Unicode ecoding from International Unicode organization.
