In optical communication and optical processing area, many kinds of optical devices are needed to realize different functions among which the optical add drop filter (OADF) is a key component. The function of OADF is adding a certain signal optical wave from the local network to the bus or dropping a certain wave from the bus to the local network and has no effect on other signal channels in the bus.In this dissertation, we designed and analyzed two different kinds of OADF by using the methods of model symmetry, coupled-model theory and Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). One of the designs is based on the two square columns which are used to construct odd and even resonant states. The other is based on one circle column which is also used to construct odd and even resonant states. We also demonstrated the devices to show the filtering function using the FDTD method which was in excellent agreement with the theory analysis.The devices we designed are with the characteristics of low loss, broad free spectrum, simple design, small volume and easily fabricating, which have advantages over the existing designs.
