Laser technology is one of the four great inventions in 20th century. It gives the traditional optical science a new life and leads a new industry rise. It has a broad application in various areas of the national economy now. This paper pays attention to the research and design of laser diode driver. The design process of traditional lasers will be introduced. And this paper will analyze and discuss the power converter which is able to be used as lasers driver.Because of the laser with high brightness, better in direction, color and coherence, it is widely used. First of all, the backgrounds on the application of laser diode are introduced. And the character of laser diode and its requirement for the drivers are shown. Upon review of the literature at home and abroad, detail analyzed for the strengths and weaknesses of existing programs will be given.Considering the requirement of stability and reliability to the system, the laser driver is used of linear power supply usually. But the low efficiency of linear power will lead to increase the size and weight of the system, which will affect to some portable application and also make energy waste for extensive use of lasers. In Chapter II, the reasons for the formation of the ripple and the ways to remove will be introduced. And the direction and difficult in researching power supply for laser driver will be discussed.In Chapter III, the way to design traditional laser driver will be introduced. And the experimental results will be shown in this part. Detail analyzes for the advantages and limitations will be given.In Chapter IV, this paper introduces the applications of coupled inductors in power supply to reduce ripple, and the principles is given. An input and output ripple free converter with a four-winding coupled inductor will be introduced. This part will analyze the influence and role of coupled inductor in ripple cancellation and system dynamics.In order to overcome the short of linear power, in Chapter V, a two current quadrant converter with low current ripple by using coupled inductor is proposed. Detail theoretical analyzes and the experiment results are given in this chapter.This work is sponsored by Science and Technology Planning Project of Zhejiang Province, China. Project No: 2009C31005.
