Accurately modeling Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) is critical to the other relative research in WMN. In this paper, we proposed a new accurate model to analyze the theoretic values of performance parameters in saturation status, such as packet loss rate, packet sending probability. Simulation results validate the correctness of proposed model. At the same time, our work gave out the algorithm to calculate theoretical ETX (expected transmission count) value for routing algorithm, which can effectively reduce the bandwidth consuming due to avoiding probe packet transmission. In order to overcome the disadvantages mentioned above, this article did an in-depth analysis to discuss the acquiring technology of routing metrics, and obtained some significant result. Main contents and innovations are listed as follows:1) The background and research status of WMN are reviewed firstly. Problems within each layer, especially in routing and MAC layer, are introduced.2) We study the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer and physical technology in detail. With the consideration of the problem in WMN, such as capture effect, hidden terminals, exposure terminals, etc, we propose the new model for theoretical analyzing the performance in the lower layers, which combine station competition model and network interference model together. Through the analysis of this new model, we give out a series of important performance indicators like packet loss rate and station transmission probability, which would give assistant to the other research in WMN.3) With the introduction of the popular routing algorithms in WMN, we discuss the metric design in detail, and give out the new method to acquire the theoretical value of ETX (Expected Transmission Count). The simulation results reveal the accuracy of the proposed method.
