Because of small in size, low loss structure, easily integrated characteristic and other excellent performances, microring resonator has become a very important device unit in integrated optics. The high-Q Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs) in the microring have attracted more and more attention in optical communication and other areas because of their unique characters.Radio over Fiber (ROF) is a technology to solve the mobile communication losses and bandwidth issues, which combines the optical fiber communications and wireless communication technologies. ROF just right satisfied the tendency of the telecommunications industry, which developing towards wireless broadband technology. Optical modulator is a key component in the ROF system, which has been studied and researched widely in the fields of the electro-optic devices. Commonly used conventional modulators covers Electro absorption modulator (EAM), electro-optic modulator (EOM). It is, on the contrary, high performance optical modulator prices are high, and what is more, not very small in size makes it is not convenient to integrate. Compared with conventional optical modulators, the microring resonator based electro-optic modulator has more advantages, such as small volume, easy for integration, simple structure, High Sensitivity. In this paper, microring resonator based electro-optic Lithium Niobate modulator and its applications are analyzed and researched. Linearity of Microring assisted Mach-Zehnder modulator is improved compared with conventional Mach-Zehnder modulator. It is showed 'better than Mach Zehnder' performance that 25dB improvement for the intermodulation free dynamic range. A novel Lithium Niobate microring based Photonic microwave receiver is implemented, which plays an important part in a ROF system. By self-mixing technology in the microing resonator achieves the optical domain RF signal directly down-conversion. The simultaneous resonance of the RF and carrier makes the modulator has a very high sensitivity.
