The paper deals with the diode end-pumped solid-state laser. A model of equivalent concave mirror in the heat field was established and a model of the light field in the cavity was built further. The thermal effect in a laser medium, especially the unsteady thermal effect has been analyzed theoretically and experimentally. A bad heat dissipation leads to the laser spot distortion and laser beam fluctuation. The result shows that the fluctuations in the laser beam strongly depend on those of the temperature in the heat sink. The temperature distribution in the laser rod has been studied. The finite element analysis method and the semi-analytical thermal analysis method are the two most popular used methods. On the other hand, a new and practical method based on experiments which is totally different from those theoretical methods has been put forward to study the temperature distribution in the laser rod. By detecting the laser output spot, using the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction formula in the laser resonator as well as stable-cavity-condition, the temperature distribution in the laser rod can be obtained. This experimental method has important value in improving the heat removal situation.
