The research and development of polarization maintaining Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) have been demonstrated. On top of that, based on the research project of rare-earth ion doped polarization maintaining PCF, two kinds of all solid polarization maintaining PCF have been successfully fabricated using multi-component glass with lower softening temperature and higher rare-earth ion doping density compared with quartz. The main body of the dissertation includes:1. Full-vector finite element method has been adopted to analyze the influence of the space between holes, the diameter of large holes and small holes, transmitted wavelength and varied refractive index difference of polarization maintaining PCF on the birefringence of the fiber; following is an analysis on the effective refractive index and mode filed distribution of the fundamental mode in the fiber with different parameters. Based on the analysis above, two kinds of all-solid polarization maintaining PCF has been designed.2. The Yb3+/Er3+ codoped lead silicate glass prepared by conventional high temperature melt-quenching method is adopted as the core material of the fiber that we design. Through measuring the absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum and refractive index of the sample, the emission cross section and fluorescence lifetime of Er3+:4I13/2â†'4I15/2 is calculated based on McCumber theory and Judd-Ofelt theory. The result indicates that the sample has a long fluorescence lifetime, large emission cross section, and weak up-conversion fluorescence. So it's an excellent laser gain material. Finally, a brief discussion on the requirements of choosing fiber material has been made, which leads to the choice of glass WT58 and H-K9L as the substrate material and hole filling material respectively.3. The fabrication of PCF is introduced in detail, with two kinds of designed polarization maintaining PCF fabricated via capillary-stacking method. Then a series of tests and experiments have been carried out on the end surface structure of the fiber, transmission loss, polarization extinction ratio, near field light spot pattern, the refractive index distribution in the cross section of the fiber and other parameters. The experimental result indicates that there is a good stability of the microstructure inside the fiber, which effectively overcomes the drawbacks of air hole corruption often occurring in traditional fabrication process, thus a good polarization maintaining capability. In a word, the all-solid structure design and simple fabrication with good polarization maintaining capability has proved the feasibility of polarization maintaining PCF.
