With the development of vehicles and mobile Ad Hoc network technology, the Vehicle Ad hoc Networks (VANET) has become the emerging field of study. VANET is a form of Mobile Ad hoc network, to provide communications among nearby vehicles and between vehicles and nearby fixed equipment, usually described as roadside equipment. The term intelligent transportation system (ITS) which is the most important application of VANET, refers to efforts to add information and communications technology to transport infrastructure and vehicles, such as vehicles and routes to improve safety and reduce transportation times, and fuel consumption. Effective use of this system can not only improve safety and efficiency of transportation systems but also enhance driving comfort.Because of the highly dynamic nature of the vehicles node in VANET, it is a very challenging problem to find and maintain the routing information. VANET routing protocols is the research hotspot at home and abroad, which has raised a lot of research results. In this paper, author analyzed the characteristics of VANET and MANET, and then further studied an important aspect of VANET- the routing protocols of VANET.In this paper author designed a new routing protocol of VANET, which services for the real-time traffic applications and has been called RBGR (Road Based Grid Routing Protocol), and carried out the simulation in NCTUns. Compared with other routing protocols, the simulation results show that the RBGR has obvious improvement in the average routing overhead and the average end to end delay jitter with the increase of vehicles number. The real-time traffic applications require data transmission time delay to be relatively stable, small average end to end delay jitter with the increase of vehicles number just meets the real-time application needs.
